Fish fossils in Canowindra

Discover fossils from the Devonian Period 416-359 million years ago, which was known as the 'Age of Fishes'.

The Australian Museum Research Institute (AMRI) worked with Pedestal3D and the Age of Fishes Museum in Canowindra on the ambitious task of capturing the most important fish fossil slabs as 3D virtual objects. Nearly 200 large slabs were captured using photogrammetry and structured-light scanning.

The Canowindra fauna is a very rich Late Devonian fish fauna. All of the fossil specimens are part of an ancient fish community that were trapped and killed in a pool of water which dried up. As a result, they're now preserved on a single bedding plane. Explore the original fossil slab below.
